BACK Part 1 – Summary
“In the Jungles of Asia, the Vietnam War is Far from Over.”
BACK is a Vietnam War/modern-day backpacker thriller set in the jungles of Laos, when the Vietnam War Jungle Experience is visited on some NYU students, who go ‘Back.’
BACK Part 1 alternates chapters set in the present day, with short chapters from a 1968 combat journal of a ‘SOG’ Special Forces Sergeant, Spike Miller, recounting a covert operation to rescue POWs in Laos, who were being held along the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War.
Interspersed with that story in Part 1, is the modern-day story. Dying of cancer, Spike gives the combat journal to his grandson, Mark, who, with his girlfriend, and their friends, students at New York University, agree a summer trip into the Laotian jungle to recover something that was left behind at the end of that mission. One of the students, Brad, is an ex-Marine.
On their way through Laos, they meet three very dodgy British travelers, who also come along, having their own unstated, shadowy agenda, unknown in Part 1.
Part 1 ends as the modern-day backpackers head into the same jungle Spike has just been extracted from in the 1968 story, as they go on an ill-fated trek to the Ho Chi Minh Trail in search of a mountain, a cave and something that Spike left behind in 1968. But things are already starting to go wrong for them…
